Anthony Castro Award

The Castro Award is given to the winner of each league season. It is named after Anthony Castro, a player in our league who was killed in a car accident on Jan. 21, 2007, at the age of 19.

Anthony started playing in Los Angeles when he turned 18 and quickly became a beloved teammate. He played for the Outsports team in the 2006 Gay Games, which was based in L.A., and won a gold medal. Anthony scored the go-ahead touchdown in the gold medal game. He also participated with L.A. in the 2006 Gay Super Bowl in Dallas.

Anthony played high school football and wrestled at Banning High School in the desert. He was a rare athlete in that he was openly gay while playing. It's a testament to how many lives he touched that Anthony's memorial service drew 500 people at the school.

The Castro Cup is named after this special player and person who will always have a place in the hearts of those he met.
